Dr. Nisreen Alwan

Associate Professor in Public Health.

 Southampton.

 

Dr Alwan is also an Honorary Consultant in Public Health at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. She has a particular interest in the area of maternal and child health. She attempts to address research questions around how to optimise the health and wellbeing of women before and during pregnancy leading to better long-term health for them and their children.

Her vision is to contribute knowledge towards a healthier and happier mother and child journey throughout the world.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Alwan has contributed to the public health response by coordinating and leading several collective outputs from senior UK public health academics, and more recently by focusing on the recognition and the quantification of morbidity from COVID19, having initiated the call to Count ‘Long COVID’. She was awarded an MBE for services to Medicine and Public Health during the COVID19 pandemic in the Queen’s New Year Honours 2021. She was also named amongst other inspiring and influential women from around the world in the BBC 100 Women 2020 list.

Dr. Binita Kane

Consultant Respiratory Physician at Manchester University Foundation Trust (MFT).

 

Dr. Kane has an interest in airways disease, quality

improvement (QI) and leadership. She is currently the lead for integrated respiratory care at MFT, the Greater Manchester Respiratory Health Innovation programme and

the North West Severe Asthma Network.

During the pandemic, she has led the cross-system Manchester COVID virtual ward.

She is a member of the Long COVID strategic group in Greater Manchester and

currently working with the NHS Chief People Officer as a member of the NHS BAME

Clinical Advisory Group, advising NHSE/I on strategic issues and feeding back on

what is required in relation to the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on BAME staff..

Outside of medicine, she has co-founded ‘South Asian Heritage Month’ in the UK,the first of which was launched online in July 2020.

Dr. Deepti
Gurdasani

Epidemiologist 

 

Dr Gurdasani is a clinical epidemiologist and statistical geneticist by background. After completing her clinical training in Internal Medicine at Christian Medical College, Vellore, India, she completed her MPhil in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Cambridge in 2010, followed by a PhD in examination of genetic factors associated with disease in genetically diverse populations, during which she examined genetic factors associated with severe influenza, and virus control in HIV infection. Her subsequent work has focused on global health, specifically using complex statistical methods to understand social, clinical, and genetic risk factors associated with disease in diverse populations across the globe. Her current focus is on understanding the impact of different interventions, as well as environmental, social, and geographical factors on the COVID-19 pandemic in a global context.. Dr. Gurdasani is an #LCKChampion

Dr. Asad Khan

Respiratory Consultant Manchester

 

Subspecialty interest in Sleep Medicine and Long-Term Ventilation. His other interests are medical education, junior doctor wellbeing, civility in the workplace, and violations of the right to access healthcare in conflict zones. 
Prior to developing Long Covid, he enjoyed cycling, swimming, and travel. He has been off work since Nov 2020 with post-COVID urticaria, POTS, pericarditis, fatigue, and cognitive impairment. Despite his position, he experienced disbelief and gaslighting by other members of the medical profession.  
Currently, he spends his time raising awareness of the condition and advocating for sufferers. He is married to a GP and they have two primary school-aged children. He is an advocate of biomedical research and treatment for Long Covid.

Prof Resia Pretorius

Physiological Sciences, Faculty of Science, Stellenbosch University, South Africa. I have been awarded the NSTF BILLITON Distinguished Research Award in 2018, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) South African Women in Science award (runner-up) in 2017

and 2019, and finalist in the Standard Bank Top women awards in 2019. Previous awards

also include the African Union Kwame Nkrumah Scientific Awards Programme awarded in

2011 for Basic Science and Technology: African Women in Science and University of Pretoria’s Exceptional Young Researcher award in 2008. I am a rated Scientist of the

National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa, and I am a member of theRoyal

Society of South Africa. Together with the aid of INNOVUS, the Technology Transfer Office of Stellenbosch University, I have filed various patents including treatment methods, biosensors for early detection of inflammation and disease risk. Recently, we have also filed

a patent for a method for the diagnosis of Long COVID. Since 2000, I have published in press nearly 300 papers in ISI rated research papers. I was also associate editor of the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease (Impact Factor 2017, and I am on the editorial board of two Nature journals, Scientific Reports and Cardiovascular Diabetology. I have delivered keynote
